You are right in a way. Marriage historically (at least in the West) has been something different than the reasons we marry today. A marriage license doesn't tell people how to live—it just gives a couple access to perks, protections and privileges. It's up to the couple top decide how they want that marriage to look like. Unfortunately, too few people have the hard conversations about what they need, want and expect within the marriage.
