It can be (and often is). American anthropologist Margaret Mead said women need three husbands — one for youthful sex, one to raise children with and one for companionship later in life.

Marriage was necessary for the first two in her day, not so much anymore. But I am all for multiple partnering for those who want a romantic partner (and periods of blessed singlehood)
