The competition between women is indeed interesting; from my research for my book, it has its evolutionary purpose as screwed up as that seems.

It’s true that we aren’t here just to please others; that said, being different can open one up to all sorts of judgment, shame, exclusion — all that ugly stuff. The older we get, though, the more free women feel to not please others. The upside of aging!
