I am referring to a particular show, which was about women. That said, women overwhelming age in poverty and men do not. For one, women make less than men and move in and out of the workplace for childrearing, and are much poorer after a divorce. We also live longer than men do and, if we are hetero, we tend to marry men older than we are and thus are widowed younger.
There have been some TV shows of bunking up together — "The Odd Couple" comes to mind. That said, it's not that Felix Unger couldn't afford a place of his own — he just had no where to go after his divorce so he showed up at the home of his his childhood friend, Oscar Madison, who also was divorced. Oscar didn't advertise for a roommate because he needed the money.
And therein lies the difference. ;-)
